Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand state of India, situated at the elevation of 5029 mts. This trek has got everything a trekker would love, deep virgin forests, gurgling brooks, breath-taking campsites, miles of undulating meadows, snow and ice, and the taste of a great adventure. It lies in the lap of Trishul massif and is famous for the hundreds of human skeletons found at the edge of the lake, which are distinctly visible when the snow melts, the lake is swarmed by plenitude of visitors.

Itinerary


Day 1 - KATHGODAM TO LOHAJUNG

  • Arrive early at Kathgodam railway station and drive to Lohajung (transportation included) which will take approximately 9 to 10 hours.
  • Breakfast and Lunch will be on the way at a roadside inn, exclusive of charges.
  • The route passes through many beautiful hill stations like Bhimtal, Almora, and Kausani. You drive alongside local rivers and get views of many peaks like Kamet, Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, and Nanda Devi amongst others.
  • Arrive at your base camp, Lohajung by the evening. It is a small town with very basic facilities available.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Lohajung.

Day 2 - LOHAJUNG TO GAIROLI PATAL (10,000 ft.)

  • 15 km drive from Lohajung to Wan and then 7 km trek to Gairoli Patal.
  • Initial 30-45 minutes ascent to Ran Ka Dhar followed by a 20-minute descent to the river Neel Ganga.
  • A stiff climb of 3 hours from Neel Ganga to Gairoli Patal.
  • You would cross the oak forest as you go and the scenic beauty is just mesmerizing.
  • Carry sufficient water from Lohajung. You can refill your water bottles at Neel Ganga.

Day 3 - GAIROLI PATAL TO ALI BUGYAL AND BACK TO GAIROLI ()

  • Trekking distance: 8 km.
  • Water sources: None. Carry 2 litres of water from the camp site.
  • The trail begins to climb steeply into an oak and rhododendron forest. And after half an hour of ascending stoned steps, the trail opens up to a huge meadow. Take the trail to right that will take you to Ali Bugyal.
  • Stiff climb for about 2 hours to Ali Bugyal followed by a gentle trail to Bedni Bugyal.
  • From Bedni Bugyal Top you get astounding view of peaks like Maiktoli, Neelkanth, Chaukhambha and Mrigathuni.

Day 3 - GAIROLI PATAL TO PATHAR-NACHUNI  

  • Trekking distance: 8 km.
  • Altitude: 12,818 ft.
  • Continue trekking from Ali Bugyal to Patharnachuni is an easy trek and follow a straight line ahead of you for about 3 kms.
  • On your gradual increase to the slope, the trek brings you to the other side of the ridge. Enjoy the marvellous sight over the ridge.
  • Patharnachuni is a brilliant campsite and offers you great views all around.
  • Overnight at Patharnachuni.

Day 4 - PATHAR-NACHUNI TO ROOPKUND AND BACK TO GAIROLI PATAL

  • Total Trekking distance: 24 km.
  • Altitude: 16,500 ft.
  • Start the day as early at 4 AM as the snow is still hard, while later in the day, it would get soft and your feet would start sinking in.
  • Roopkund is a 5 km gradually up-hill climb from Bhagwabasa. You will have a steep climb towards the end of the trail to reach Roopkund. It would take about 3 - 3½ hours to reach Roopkund.
  • Be careful in trekking back as the snowy slopes may be very slippery
  • Overnight at Gairoli Patal.

Day 6 - GAIROLI PATAL TO LOHAJUNG VIA WAN 

  • Trekking distance: 7 km.
  • Altitude: 7,662 ft.
  • Enjoy your journey back to Lohajung via Wan. The path is fairly simple and you would not feel any distress throughout.
  • You would cross the oak forest as you go and the scenic beauty is just mesmerizing. You would see the end of meadows after a few minutes.
  • Get astonished by looking at the Trishul on your way back from Bedni Bugyal to Wan and pass the Rhododendron forest.
  • This will be a steep descent for the Neel Ganga. Faster trekkers reach there in approximately one and a half hours. However, you should take your time and enjoy the beauty as you go by.
  • From the river, it takes about half an hour to climb to the ridge above Wan village.
  • Overall it takes about 6 -7 hours to Wan.
  • Drive back to Lohajung.

Day 7 - LOHAJUNG TO KATHGODAM 

  • Today we will say goodbye and thanks for being with us on a wonderful journey.

We totally understand that unforeseen circumstances might need you to change plans, and so our cancellation policy makes it easier to do that.
  • Cancellations prior to 30 days from the start of the trip — full refund.
  • Cancellation between 30 days and 15 days to the start of the trip — 50% refund.
  • Cancellation less than 15 days to the start of the trip — no refund.

In case of unforeseen weather conditions, government restrictions or any other unavoidable circumstances beyond the control of the host, certain activities during the expedition or the event itself may be cancelled, or there could be change in the itinerary. In such cases, the host will try their best to provide an alternate feasible activity or a voucher will be handed over (in case of cancellation or rescheduling of event) to you. However no refund will be provided for the same.

In case the trip is cancelled by the host for lack of minimum number of people in the batch, you will get a full refund.
