Bir Billing is the best place for workation in Himachal, as there is a thriving community of remote workers. Bir checks all the requirements to work from mountains with high speed internet, backpacker hostels, a lively community and amazing views of the mountains.
Winters (November to January): Winters in Himalayas are cold in general, but since Bir at an altitude of 1500m it is not as harsh as the higher towns like Manali. It is great when the sun is out, but evenings and nights require heaters or bonfire. You can also witness snow in Billing from mid December to mid January.
Summers (April to June): Days are warm, and evenings are pleasant. The sun feels too hot, but strong winds flow since its a broad valley and it is pleasant if you are sitting in the shade. Fans are required in the room during the day.
Monsoon (July to mid September): It rains heavily in Bir. Paragliding is closed from 1st July to 14th September, but it is one of the most beautiful times to visit since it is very lush and green all around. You must keep in mind that there will be more insects, and that going out becomes hard due to the rains.
Other seasons (February, March and September, October): Weather wise, these are the best seasons to travel to Bir. Its neither warm, nor too cold. It is pleasant weather all the time.
No, but it snows nearby during the winters(mid Dec to mid Jan). It is actually ideal if it doesn't snow where you stay, and yet you can drive to it in 15-20 minutes. This ensures that you can still have all the fun while being away from all the perills of snow such as interupted electricity, water etc.
Broad, open valley: The altitude difference between Billing (the take off site), and Bir (the landing site) is around a 1000 meters. The broad open valley ensures that your flight is safe, and has a long duration.
Terrain: The takeoff site has an open face which allows smooth takeoff. The landing site is a large, smooth & leveled meadow which ensures a safe landing experience.
Wind conditions: Bir has perfect conditions to fly with great thermals (required for gaining altitude during the flight), and smooth winds.
Short & Long Flight Options: The standard flight is 15-25 minutes, but you can also opt for a 2 hour long flight which is not available at any other place in India.
Affordability: The standard flight costs Rs 3000 for 15-25 minutes, which is cheaper than other places if you compare the per minute cost of the flight.
Yes, you can do the beginner course (P1+P2) in 1 week and fly alone. Advanced courses (P3,P4,P5 etc) are also available but they are more time consuming. All courses take care of your work schedule so you can do it along your office schedule.
