The fifth edition of Ride the Silk is here! We invite cycling enthusiasts from around the country to take part in one of India's most unique cycling events to have been started in recent years.
The 5-day cycle ride through East Sikkim, in ice cold weather, takes you from temperate forests to alpine forests, through the 32 hairpin bends: the Zuluk loops, to arrive at Thambi view point for panoramic views of the Kanchendzongha. Ride to Nathula along the shrubby fields at Gnanthang, huge alpine lakes and then descend to Gangtok via the famous Tsomgo Lake.

Participants have felt stoked by the circumstances and environment in which they braved the weather and defeated their inner demons to come out victorious and complete the exhilarating journey with flying colors.

Day 1: Bagdogra/Pakyong to Aritar - 120 km

We pick you up from Bagdogra/Pakyong Airport by mid-day and drive you to Aritar (120 kms/4-5 hours). We set you up at a nice, local homestay, where you rest and prepare yourself for the electrifying ride ahead.

Day 2: Aritar to Phadamchen - 36.7 km

The ride flags off from Lampopkhri Lake in Aritar (4,600 ft), and you initially ride downhill towards Rongli. From the Rongli bridge, you move uphill towards Phadamchen (8,000 ft), which is our first pitstop on the trip. On this day, we cycle for 36.7 km and gain an elevation of 3,400 ft. The day’s arduous ride uphill is greeted by a fun-filled evening at a local homestay, where you experience Sikkimese hospitality and exquisite local cuisine.

Day 3: Phadamchen to Dhupidara - 24 km

We leave Phadamchen early and steadily ride up a beautiful 10-km stretch with pine forests on both sides. From here you will see the famous 32 hair-pin bends of the Zuluk loops. Once the treeline has ended, your ride up the Zuluk loops begin. We take the day’s pitstop at Dhupidara, cycling a total of 24 km and gaining 3,500 ft in elevation. At the end of the day, if the weather remains clear, you will be able to see all 32 bends, Zuluk village and the valley below, your starting point, Aritar, and a spectacular view of Kanchenzonga, the third highest mountain in the world.

Day 4: Dhupidara to Gnathang via Zuluk Loops - 9 km

On this day, you wake up to the grandeur of the Kanchenzonga and make a steady climb of 2 kms of zig-zag loops to reach the ridge of the mountain. From here, the mountain peaks of Bhutan will be visible at a distance. The day’s short 9 km ride with an elevation gain of 2,000 ft, will include many army settlements, and we stop at Gnathang (13,500 ft) for the night.

Day 5 - Gnathang - Nathu La - Gnathang - 29 km

The most iconic ride of the trip, as we ride from Gnathang towards Nathu La Pass and back. With the high winds at 14,140 ft, it is going to be a challenging day of mountain biking. The challenge feels worth it when you cross several beautiful landmarks such as the majestic Elephant Lake, the famous Baba Harbhajan Mandir, and Hangu Lake. When you reach Nathu La Pass, the border gate with Chinese flags fluttering will serve a firm reminder of how far you have come. From Nathu La, you head back to the same homestay in Gnathang and rest before the next day’s downhill ride towards Gangtok.

Day 6 - Gnathang - Tsomgo Lake - Gangtok - 59.5 km

The downhill ride in the morning starts close to the Nathu La Pass, approx. 2 kms. On this day, you will cross more army settlements, experience cliff-side biking at its best and pass through the spectacular Tsomgo Lake crossing, to eventually reach Gangtok. This day will be the longest in terms of the distance covered, a mammoth 59.5-km route with an elevation drop from 12,500 ft to 5,400 ft on reaching Gangtok. A warm cosy spot at Tag Along Backpackers hostel awaits you for the night.

Day 7: Gangtok Sightseeing

A complete rest day for you to take the full opportunity and explore Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The places to explore in and around Gangtok include monasteries like Rumtek, Enchey and Tsuk La Khang, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park, Hanuman Tok, Tashi View Point, Lal Bazaar and M.G. Marg. If your zeal for adventure is still unsatiated, take a dig at Paragliding. For food lovers, authentic local delicacies, and unheard-of flavors await you.

Day 8: Gangtok - Bagdogra - 123.4 km

We drive you to Bagdogra Airport in the morning and bid you adieu only to meet again soon, on another adventure!
