Kuari pass is also known as Lord Curzon's trail since the British viceroy George Curzon attempted crossing it and loved exploring this area. Though the pass is not very high it offers excellent views of Nanda Devi, Dunagiri and other Himalayan peaks. The Nanda Devi national park and the Rishi Ganga gorge are visible from the first day itself. The eyes are gifted with grand views of the peaks of Chaukhamba massif, Neelkanth, Mana, Kamet, Hathi, Ghodi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Nanda Devi, Dunagiri.

Pangarchulla peak adds an exciting element to the trek. The route goes to well over 4,000 m and offers exhilarating views of the Himalayas. The trail to the peak is the most difficult part of the trek as it goes over boulders and scree.

Day 01: Haridwar to Joshimath (1,875 m) (8-9 h drive)

We leave early at 6 am and drive to Joshimath via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Nandaprayag. The night is spent in a guest house in Joshimath.

Day 02: Joshimath to Taali (3,500 m) via Dhak (2,100 m) – 5-6 h (8 km)

After breakfast we drive from Joshimath to Dhak towards the road to Tapovan. The trek begins at Dhak. The trail goes uphill towards our right away from the road. Over half of the path is open and without shade. We pass two villages on the way. We enter a forest about a kilometer before reaching the meadow of Guling. Behind us, we can witness the peak of Dunagiri. We again enter a forest from here. The winding path gives way to the campsite at Taali.

Day 03: Taali to Kuari pass (3,820 m) and back to Taali – 5-6 h (10 km)

We have an early breakfast and start walking uphill towards the pass in the forest. Soon, the forest opens up to huge meadows. We cross the meadow and reach a ledge which leads to a small saddle. We can rest here for a moment. Some uphill walk from here leads us to the top of a hillock. This point has panoramic views of Himalayan peaks (Chaukhambha, Neelkanth, Mana, Hathi, Ghodi, Dunagiri etc). A slight descent and further walk ahead, we reach a windy ridge. From the ridge, we follow the trail leading right towards the pass. We spend some time at the pass and head back along the same way, proceeding towards our campsite.

Day 04: Taali to summit of Pangarchulla peak (4,570 m) and back to camp – 7-8 h (~13 km)

We start very early on this day. And head towards the boulder and scree dominated path leading to the top of Pangarchulla peak. After climbing for about 4 hours, we reach the top and are greeted by commanding views of Himalayan peaks. We start our descent by noon and reach campsite by late afternoon.

Day 05: Taali to Auli trek; Drive to Joshimath – 3-4 h trek (8 km) + 30 min drive

On this day we initially reach Taali lake. We proceed further on the almost level trail towards Auli. We get magnificent view of Nanda Devi peak on the way. A vehicle will take us from Auli to Joshimath.

Day 06: Joshimath to Haridwar drive - (8-9 h drive)

We leave from Joshimath and reach Haridwar by early evening.
