Bir-Billing is Asia's best Paragliding destination and has the best paragliding courses and instructors in India. A lot of Indian and International tourists visit Bir-Billing for Paragliding courses and Cross-Country Paragliding. Bir boasts the pride of hosting the Paragliding World Cup in 2015 as well.

P1 + P2 is the most basic course in Paragliding that one needs to complete to be eligible for their first solo flight. The course starts with ground training, and later you get a few solo flights to get the flavour of flying solo from 2430m. This course teaches you the basics of flying like glider handling, take off techniques, how to turn mid-air, landing techniques etc.

Your Instructor for this course will be Mr. Subhash Thakur, who is popularly known as "TT bhaiya" in Bir. He is a local from the valley who has been conducting paragliding courses for about half a decade now. He has been invited by the Arunachal Government for training and workshops in the past.

  • The course will start off with ground training(P1) for 3-4 days(depending upon how fast you learn) which will teach you how to:
    • Assess the wind and weather for flying conditions
    • Handle the equipment
    • Check your equipment before the flight
    • Glider management such as forward inflation, handling the glider post inflation, steering the glider mid-air, canopy deflation
    • Take off & landing techniques
  • Post ground training you will get 2 guaranteed flights from Billing(15-25 min per flight). These flights will be supervised from the landing and take-off site via radio. Some instructors in Bir offer short flights from Dhelu instead of Billing, but Mr Subhash (your instructor for the course) feels that flights from Billing are actually safer since you get time to listen to the instructor and stabalise since its a longer flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Private Buses from Delhi will drop you at Main Market, Chougan.
Bir Nest is 2 KMs from there. You can either take a taxi available for ₹100 on request or take a walk towards [Upper] Bir.

If you are coming via HRTC bus then you will reach Bir bus stand.
Take a walk downhill towards Chougan Main Market, Bir Nest is about 500m from there.

The duration of your flight depends a lot on the thermals in the air and the air-current. Thus, the best time to take a tandem-flight is during the summers when there are good thermals in the air and the winds are strong (not a problem for experienced pilots that you go with in tandem). The best time to learn paragliding though is post monsoon during the winters (the wind is more stable and is beginner friendly).

The flight might get cancelled in case of bad weather (strong winds or rain) and thus we don't take bookings from 1st July to 15th September.

For the maximum flight time, you should try to do it from 9 AM to 3 PM since the thermals are maximum during that time. Some people also prefer to watch the sunset during their flight, but the flight might be smaller due to the absence of thermals during sunset.

Meet Your Host

Bir Nest
Bir Nest
Backpacker hostel in Bir

The hostel is named Bir Nest since we believe in giving a home-like feel to all the flyers of Bir (Birds fly, nest is home -- how poetic!).

We offer one of the best sunset viewing points in Bir, 360° view of the valley, homely food. We are a couple of conversation-hungry backpackers who ran away from the city life, and opened up a hostel to meet new people everyday.
