Indira point, a village in the Nicobar district at Great Nicobar Island is the southernmost point of India. The Indira Point was formerly known as Parsons Point or Pygmalion Point. It was renamed in honour of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The official renaming ceremony took place on 10 October 1985.
The Indira Point lighthouse which provides illumination/direction to the sea vessels travelling to Malaysia and Malacca via India was commissioned into service on 30 April 1972. The Southernmost tip subsided by 4.25 metres after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami had devastated the island. It is estimated that about 16- 20 families residing beside the lighthouse and four scientists had lost their lives. As per the 2011 census of India, there are only 4 households left with a literacy rate of about 85 %.
