About 966 sq.km of these islands are covered by diverse mangroves which constitute to about 10.85 % of the total forest area of these islands. The group of Islands accounts for more than 25 % of the country’s coastline.

Anchored in transition zones, these forests deliver a wide variety of benefits for the local population. The islanders use the mangroves as a source of food, medicine, fuel and at times for recreational activities.
