Nicobar Breadfruit is a rare fruit of the Pandanus tree, found and widely consumed in Nicobar. The evergreen tree has heavy ball-shaped fruits which are harvested from the forests and coasts. The edible fruit is gathered by the local people, while its other parts are also brought to use. It comprises of a number of individual drupes which are hard, woody wedges- each containing a few seeds.
The leaves of the plant are used for thatching or making mats. The fibrous portions of the drupes are combined together to craft a brush which is used for removing dust from their feet. Also, the fruit is eaten in a variety of ways. The fruit can be eaten in its raw form but is most commonly processed to produce a spread similar to butter. It is also used to bake cakes and pastries.
