Kila Raipur Sports Festival, popularly known as the Rural Olympics of India, hosts competitions for major Punjabi rural sports every February in Kila Raipur, 19 km away from Ludhiana. The three-day long festival features events like kite flying, tug of war, kabaddi, athletics and other rural games. Animals also compete in events like bull racing, cockfighting, horse cart racing etc. Other bizarre showcases include twisting iron-rod by placing it on Adam’s apple, passing a tractor over the rib-cage, pulling cars with teeth and what not.
The Kila Raipur Sports Festival was started in 1933 by the Grewal Sports Association. The festival started a movement, and today rural sports competitions are being held in almost 7000 villages of Punjab.
