- Le Corbusier
Le Corbusier was a notable Swiss-French architect who designed administration buildings like the Secretariat Building, Palace of Assembly, and High Court in Chandigarh. He is also known for providing the city’s general layout that has been divided in sectors.
A repetitively used motif by the architect is that of an Open Hand. City of Chandigarh too lets you witness the Open Hand sculptures that stand at the height of 26 metres. According to Corbusier, the open hand symbolises "peace and reconciliation - it is open to give and open to receive". He also sees it as a sign of "Second Machine Age".
The Capitol Complex that includes the High Court, Assembly, and Secretariat, was declared as World Heritage by UNESCO in July 2016 at the 40th World Heritage Conference session, Istanbul. The inscription by UNESCO was mentioned under "The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement".
