Statue of Unity
Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, is located in the Narmada district of Gujarat. The statue is of the Indian statesman and founding father, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. With a height of 182 metres, it is almost twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty (excluding the pedestal). It is located on Sadhu Bet, a river-island facing the Narmada dam.
The monument and the surrounding areas occupy 4.9 acres of land and are surrounded by a 12 square km artificial lake. It was built by Larsen & Toubro for a whopping amount of 2,989 crores. Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar had designed the statue. The statue has been engineered to withstand wind speeds of up to 50 m per second.
The total height of the structure from its base is 240 m while the statue measures 182 m in height. Steel framing, reinforced cement concrete, and bronze cladding were used in the construction process. 75,000 cubic metres of concrete, 5,700 tonnes of steel and 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel rods were used.
Turner Construction (project manager of Burj Khalifa), Meinhardt Group and Michael Graves and Associates together supervised the project. It took approximately 40 months for the construction of the statue.
