Palitana is the world’s only mountain that has more than 850 temples. A town in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, it is a major pilgrimage centre for Jains. The city is considered to be one of the first vegetarian cities in the world and is located 50 km southwest of Bhavnagar city. The main temple is dedicated to the first Tirthankara (teacher of dharma) — Lord Rishabhanath.
Founded in 1194, the Palitana State was a princely state. The temple complex and the mountain are considered as the most sacred place by the Jain community. These temples were built by generations of Jains over a period of 900 years, from the 11th century onwards. Next to the Adeshwara Temple is a Muslim shrine of Angar Pir, a Sufi saint who lived here in the 14th century. He protected the temple from the attacks of Alauddin Khilji as he believed in the sacredness of the temples.
The temples are carved exquisitely in marble and have more than 3,000 odd stone steps from the foot of the hill to the top. The temple of Shri Adishwar has ornate architectural motifs. The temple sports a fabulous collection of jewels which can be viewed upon with special permission.
Palitana became the first city in the world to be legally vegetarian in the year 2014. It has made illegal the buying and selling of meat, fish and eggs. Fishing and penning food animals has also been made illegal.
