The Kalka-Shimla Mail route, declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, was built with 107 tunnels, 919 curves and 864 bridges. This 2 feet 6 inches narrow-gauge railway track, showcases a mesmerising and picturesque view throughout its journey, traversing through its mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. The Kalka- Shimla Mail has one of the steepest rise in altitude (5816 ft) in the least distance covered (just 96 km) in the whole world.
This 96.54-kilometer long track stands witness to the emblematic technical and material efforts to manoeuvre through the dangerous mountainous terrain. Out of the 107 tunnels that were originally built, 102 are still in use.
