Karnataka is the largest producer of Silk in India. It annually produces about 9000 metric tonnes of Mulberry silk each year, amounting to about 70% of the national silk production. Silk initially started being produced in the Mysore area around 1500 CE. The "Mysore Silk" brand is now owned entirely by Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation.
Silk has always been known as a luxury good in India and has been used to make saris, shirts, dhotis and ties. The Karnataka government set up a "Silk city" North of Bengaluru which now houses the largest silk cocoon market in Asia.
