Yakshagana

Yakshagana is a traditional theatre form of Karnataka that involves dance, music and dialogue in extravagant dresses and makeup. The stories depicted are generally excerpts from Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Hindu texts. Yakshagana literally means the song (gana) of the nature spirits (yaksha).

Generally, the art form starts at dusk and ends at dawn with a prayer to Lord Ganesha. A storyteller, known as the bhagavatha, narrates the story while the actors carefully follow the narration along with exhilarating music by some musicians. The elaborate costumes, along with the overwhelming enthusiasm of the participants, take the play to the next level.
