Coffee was first planted in India by Baba Budan, who smuggled 7 beans to India while returning from a pilgrimage to Mecca and planted them in Chandragiri Hills in Chikmagalur. In a couple of hundred years, the seven beans of coffee had multiplied into the first coffee plantation of India, in 1840. The hills are now named after him and known as Baba Budan Giri.
Currently, Karnataka accounts for more than 70% of the coffee produced in India, out of which around 80% gets exported out of India. Arabica and Robusta are the two popular species of coffee that are grown in India. One can trek to Mullayangiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, to get a jaw-dropping view of thousands of acres of coffee plantations.
