________ in Meghalaya, is famous for being one of the cleanest villages in India.
- Nongriat Village
- Mawlynnong Village
- Mawsynram Village
Mawlynnong, declared as one of the cleanest villages in India in 2003, 2005 and 2016, is located 90 km from Shillong. What was once one of the poorest villages of Meghalaya, is now one of the richest villages of the region due to the influx of tourists after the title was given to it.
The village is known for its community-based cleanliness drives. All villagers are required to participate in the weekly cleanliness drives, apart from keeping their surroundings clean every day. Disposal of plastic in the village is prohibited, and the tourists are required to carry back any of their plastic waste. The use of polythene and smoking is also banned in the village.
The village has peculiar dustbins made out of bamboo all around the village. One can find villagers of all ages sweeping their neighboorhood in the morning. Even the dry leaves find their place in the dustbin. The waste is then segregated, biodegradable waste is converted into manure and the non-biodegradable waste is taken outside the village and burnt due to the lack of nearby recycling facilities.
