Meghalaya is a host to about ____ tracts of virgin forests which are protected by the local communities, also known as sacred groves.
The sacred groves are one of the most intriguing secrets of Meghalaya. According to the legend, these forests aren’t ordinary forests but are home to a deity that is worshipped by the villagers to protect them from all harm. People believe that even picking broken twigs from the forest could lead to the wrath of the gods, and thus these forests are one of the most untouched wonders of nature in the world.
Every sacred grove also is a home to a sacred altar. It may be of the form of a monolith rock or a proper altar covered on all sides by massive rocks. These altars are used by the local communities to offer prayers and gratitude to the Almighty.
Meghalaya is also believed to hold almost half of all mammal genus found in India. The forests are a home to more than 325 different species of orchids and 660 different bird species.
