Mawsynram

Mawsynram, a village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, receives the highest average annual rainfall in the world according to the Guinness World Records. It is the wettest place on earth, with an annual rainfall of 11,873 mm.

The villagers have their own ways to deal with the everlasting humidity and rainfall. Houses in Mawsynram have grass on the top of the roofs to dampen the sound of the rain. They have also devised a hands-free umbrella, also known as “knup”, that allows them to carry on with their activities in rain.

Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra, is another nearby town that is famous for its rainfall. It holds the world record for highest rainfall in a month (in July 1861) and the highest rainfall in a year (between August 1860 and July 1861).
