There are 16 main tribes of Nagaland, notably — Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Kachari, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Yimchunger, and Zeme-Liangmai. The Angamis, Aos, Lothas, Sumis and Konyaks are the largest Naga tribes followed by several other smaller tribes.
The Aos were the first Naga tribe to embrace Christianity and adhere to Western education that was imparted along with Christianity. Due to this, the Aos became a prominent tribe because of their expertise in many fields brought to them by Western Education.
According to the 2011 census, the total population of Ao in Nagaland is almost about 227,000. They are found in the north-eastern part of Nagaland and in the central Mokokchung District. The Mokokchung District is considered to be the home of the Ao tribe. The district covers an area of about 1,615 square km and is bound by Assam to its north, Zunheboto to its South, Wokha to its west and Tuensang to its east.
