Garadi

Garadi is considered as the most popular folk dance form of Puducherry. This dance form is believed to have originated from the Hindi epic of Ramayana. It is said that the Vanar Sena had performed this dance after rescuing Sita from the clutches of Ravana. This dance form marks their victory and the triumph of good over evil.

This dance performance lasts for around 5 to 8 hours. The performers disguise themselves as the vanars or monkeys from Ramayana. The dance steps are known as the "Ramadolus" and match to the beat of two large drums. The dancers sport unique iron rings, ten on each leg which are known as "Anjali". These rings add music to the rhythmic beats of the drums.
