Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Manakula Vinayagar Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is a vibrant Hindu temple known for its elephant’s blessings. An elephant at the gate of the temple, also known as Lakshmi, collects coins from the devotees and blesses them with her trunk. The temple is one of the most popular tourist and pilgrimage site of Puducherry. Around 300 years ago, a saint had attained Samadhi in this temple. Since then it is considered auspicious to bring newborns to the temple before taking them to any other place.

The temple is also famous for its ornately carved stone walls & the golden chariot. The golden chariot present in the temple complex, compromises of 7.5 kg of gold and is estimated to cost around 35 lakhs. The chariot is 10 feet in height and 6 feet in breadth. It was run for the first time on 5 October 2003 and is taken outside the temple complex every year on Vijayadhasami.

The temple was built before the colonisation of Puducherry by the French and has been standing since then. It is believed that during the tenure of Dupleix, there were attempts to destroy the temple, which lead to strong protests from the Hindu population.
