Which city is also known as the Golden city?
Jaisalmer is also known as the Golden city because traditionally most of the houses of the were made of sandstone, thus giving the city a golden look. Even today, most of the houses have beautiful carvings on their exteriors and walking in a neighboorhood feels like one is walking in a campus of monuments.
The city also boasts of the Jaisalmer fort, which is the only living fort in India with a couple of thousand residents within its walls. Travelers can find shops, houses, temples and eateries all within the fort itself. The whole city used to live inside the fort premises till the 17th century. The fort is about 1,500 ft long and 750ft wide and is built at an elevation of 250ft from its surrounding area.
There are more cities in Rajasthan that are color-coded and thus a delight for photographers. For instance, Jaipur is known as the Pink city, Udaipur as White city, Jodhpur as Blue city and Bikaner as Red city.
