Thar desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is the 9th largest sub-tropical desert and covers an area of more than 200,000 sq km. About 75% of it lies in India out of which more than half is a part of Rajasthan.
A region of the desert in Rajasthan is known as Marushtali, meaning "land of the dead" in sanskrit. Marushtali region recieves less than 25 cm of rainfall and thus has a high density of sand dunes. The population density is as low as 4 people per sq km in some areas. Sam sand dunes and Khuri sand dunes are the most popular sand dune destinations of the region.
