Which of these architectural marvels is known as a Baori?
A stepwell, as the name suggests, is a large well in which one can reach the water by descending large staircases along the sides of the wall. They are known as Baori in Rajasthan. The concept is said to have originated to ensure water during the periods of drought, and thus the construction of stepwells in the dry areas of Rajasthan and Gujrat was very common till the 16th century.
Chand Baori, located at Abhaneri in Rajasthan, is one of the oldest and deepest stepwells in India. The 100 ft deep stepwell has about 3,500 steps over 13 storeys.
