__________ is the state animal of Sikkim.
- Himalayan Bear
- Red Panda
The Red panda, the state animal of Sikkim, is native to the eastern part of the Himalayas and southwestern regions of China. In view of its declining number (less than 10,000) due to poaching, inbreeding depression, habitat loss, etc., the species has been declared endangered by IUCN in 2008.
The mammal has a shaggy tail and reddish-brown fur and can often be seen feeding on bamboo. Inactive through the day, a red panda is usually active from dusk to dawn. Being extremely heat sensitive, the animal can bear temperature within 17 to 25 degree Celsius and thus can easily adapt in deciduous and coniferous mountain forests.
