____________ is the largest monastery in Sikkim.
- Rumtek Monastery
- Pemayangtse Monastery
- Dubdi Monastery
Located 23 kilometers from Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery is renowned for its dazzling reliquary — the Golden Stupa. Magnificently structured and embellished, Golden Stupa holds the holy relics of the Sixteenth Karmapa. Being the largest in Sikkim, this three-storey monastery accommodates a community of monks who dedicatedly participate in the sacred ceremonies of Karma Kagyu ancestry.
Rumtek Monastery is fairly recognized for imparting knowledge on the Kagyu teachings. In the prayer hall, one can get easily absorbed in the expertly hand-painted wall murals, thankas, silks, and statues. A large courtyard located within the accommodation buildings of the monks, not to mention the reputable Nalanda Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies should not be missed.
Infused with religion, knowledge, and culture, the monasteries in Sikkim are awe-inspiring. Other must-visit Buddhist monasteries include Dubdi Monastery, Enchey Monastery, Kartok Monastery, and Lingdum Monastery to name a few.
