The holy Gurudongmar Lake has been named after Guru Padmasambhava (also known by the name of Guru Rinpoche), who was the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. The lake is believed to be blessed by the spiritual leader of Sikhism, Guru Nanak when he was passing by it. This sacred lake is equally respected by Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs.
The lake is situated in North Sikkim at the altitude of 17,800 ft. and at a distance of 190 kilometres from Gangtok. Moreover, it is only 5 kilometres south of the Tibetan border. It is reachable by road from Lachen through Thangu. When travelling from Thangu to Gurudongmar Lake, one has to go through a rocky terrain covered with moraine and surrounded by rhododendron trees.
