Before the dawn of Buddhism and Hinduism, people staunchly followed the principles of _________ in Spiti.
- Lung Pe Chhoi
Lung Pe Chhoi
Sharing some of the characteristics with Bön religion, Lung Pe Chhoi was formed on the grounds of animism. As the religion was flourishing, people paid homage to ‘Iha’ (evil spirits of the natural world) through animal and human sacrifices. Apparently, these evil spirits usually resided in the old pencil-cedar trees, caves, or rocks.
Lamas, who are said to have supernatural powers, project some fading signs of Lung Pe Chhoi religion through their conduct. These Lamas were and still are visited by the people in the cases of natural calamities and are said to possess the unique powers of curing ailments. Gradually, this religion paved the way for Buddhism and Hinduism in the 8th or 9th century.
