Driving is allowed on which beach in Kerala?
- Muzhappilangad Beach
- Cherai Beach
- Marari Beach
Muzhappilangad, which is 12 km from Thalassery, is the longest drive-in beach in Asia. Local laws allow people to drive for a 4 km stretch on the beach. The crescent-shaped beach is protected from the strong current by giant black rocks. The steady current, along with firm sand makes driving along the shore possible. The speed of the vehicles is restricted to 20km/hr, and driving is sometimes not allowed during the monsoon season as a safety measure.
Other than being a driver's paradise, the beach is also a host to migratory birds in the winter. The long and broad shore, along with giant black rocks on the sides of the beach provides a safe place for migration to the birds. Apart from migratory birds, Olive Ridley Turtles reach the shores during their breeding season in December-January.
