creating artificial glaciers
Ladakh is a cold desert with an annual precipitation of only 100 mm. Thus most villagers face shortage of water in the crucial months of April and May when there is little water in the streams. Global warming, on the top of this, is worsening the problem every year.
The idea behind creating artificial glaciers is to conserve the water flowing away in streams throughout the winter and freeze it for consumption in the spring season when the crops are grown. This is achieved by spraying the stream water vertically where it freezes naturally during the winters due to unreal cold and large surface area.
Sonam Wangchuk, the innovator behind this project has founded various organisations in Ladakh like SECMOL and HIAL that work on various problems faced in the region and come up with innovative solutions. He came to spotlight in 2009, when his story inspired the character Phunsukh Wangdu played by Amir Khan in the movie 3 Idiots.
