Roopkund

Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake at an altitude of 16,499 ft in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is also known as the Skeleton Lake because of the remains of hundreds of human skeletons that were found at the bottom of the lake in 1942. Over the years, Roopkund has become one of the most popular trekking destinations in Uttarakhand.

According to the local legend, King and Queen of Kanauj, their servants and many others were going to the Nanda Devi Shrine when they died to a ferocious hailstorm at RoopKund. Scientific studies have also pointed in a similar direction by stating that more than 300 people died at Roopkund in the 9th century CE due to injuries by round objects on the back of the head.

Since the lake is in frozen state for the majority of the year, the skeletons can only be seen for about a month when the snow melts, generally around end of September.
