In 1984, Bachendri Pal became the first Indian women that reached the summit of Mount Everest. She was born in Nakuri village in the Garhwal division of Uttarakhand. She had to overcome stiff opposition from her family when she decided to pursue mountaineering as a career rather than working as a school teacher. She was later awarded Padma Shri and Arjuna Award in 1984 and 1986 respectively.
Uttarakhand is a host to two of the best mountaineering institutes of India. Nehru institute of Mountaineering was established in 1965 and is one of the most prestigious mountaineering institutes in Asia. Pandit Nain Singh Surveyor Mountaineering Training Institute is rather new and was established in 2015.
