Durga Puja is an annual Hindu festival celebrated widely in West Bengal. The festival brings about the bengali community together where they dress up and go for pandal hopping. Earlier, the puja was organized only by wealthy families, but during the 19th century a middle-class family in Kolkata wished to organize the puja and thus created a community. Since then the Puja has been the principal festival of Bengal.

The beautiful and the magnificent idols of goddess Durga and her siblings put up in various pandals during Durga Puja are a gift of Kumartuli. Kumartuli Potter’s town located in the North Kolkata is a 300 years old locality of potters who intricately craft these beautiful wonders.

This settlement came into existing when a couple of potters came searching for livelihood and finally settled down here. Kumartuli stands for potter locality. This locality has about 550 workshops where people work diligently to complete the idols before the puja time. The idols are mostly made of bamboo and clay thus making them environment-friendly. There are guided tours of Kumartuli and the best time to witness is just before the Durga Puja.
